In the regular kindergarten program (K5), students learn to read phonetically. They will be taught the letters of the alphabet and will be able to read approximately four hundred fifty words. Subjects include writing, art, music, poetry, science, social studies, readiness skills, and numbers. The children learn to count from 1 to 100 by 1's, 2's, 5's and 10's.

Curriculum

The “A Beka” curriculum which emphasizes phonics and reading skills.

Class Goals

Phonics:

  • name and sound of each letter of the alphabet
  • blending consonants and vowels
  • reading one and two vowel words
  • sentences, capital, period
  • reading groups (beginning in December)

Number Concepts:

  • recognition and counting 1-100
  • before and after numbers
  • larger than/smaller than
  • counting by 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s
  • money-pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters and dollars
  • telling time – o’clock, fifteen, half past
  • calendar
  • addition combinations through the sums of 10
  • subtraction (single digits)
  • spelling number words (one-ten)

Printing:

letters, blends, words, and sentences learned in phonics
